Lib 311 is a class that I would recommend to everyone. I learned a lot from the class, here is a course description of the class:

In lib 311 is a class about information. Students will research a topic of their choice. Through the class students will learn how to find information on their topic. Students will learn about the information resources available and how to effectively use those resources. Lib 311 gives you experience evaluating sources, to find the most reliable and relevant information. By compiling an annotated bibliography you will learn how to properly use the information. Your sources will need to be properly cited and annotated without plagiarizing. In the class you will not only learn about information literacy but also hear some interesting lectures on related topics. Some topics include computers and technology, privacy, and the information cycle.

How does a name’s meaning affect a person’s sense of identity and other’s perceptions of that person?

     I am interested in names, identity, and the power that names have. I was considering changing topics but have decided to stick with names. But I may need to alter my research question as I get more research. I have some ideas that I want to cover and just need to find sources to verify the facts. I will be focusing on peoples names but would also like to broaden the research to include names of things as well.
        Some Jews will not spell out the whole name of God but instead will write G-d. From what I have heard some will not even speak the name out side of worship but will say another name in its place. This is interesting to me because they have created a ritual around the use of the name of God. This implies that at least to these people the names of God are more than just simple words that identify something. Why not just say or write the name? How is not saying the name more respectful to God?
            A few more points of interest:
     secret names from what I understand the gonstics believed they had a secret name that was important for their salvation.
     changing names of things changes peoples perceptions. Especially in politics there are people who make a living by basically changing the name of something for example instead of “global warming” they might say “climate change”, Another example is instead of saying “the war on Iraq” change it to “the war on terror”.
     Finally movies and books often feature names as expressing someones identity such as the scene in roots where a man is wiped because he wont change his name, from the matrix when Keano Reves is fighting the agent and hes like “my name is Neo.” In the animated movie Spirited Away the main character is taken by a witch who tries to steal her name and if she forgets her name she will be trapped.

For lack of a better topic for now I have chosen names and how names affect peoples lives? So that will be my research topic for now.
